![]() The Rio is a rough wild freestone river roaring from Colorado on through Taos and on down into the Gulf. The most productive trout sections through the Rio Grande Gorge are made up of crashing pocket water, long slicks and deep riffles. At depths of up to 1000 feet below the rim, anglers in good shape can often be isolated from the easier access points located south of Taos. The Rio is a mystical river, often unpredictable. The best times to fish this river are when flows are below 500cfs, typically in the late Fall and then again in Spring. ![]() A tremendous caddis hatch takes place in the Spring, unfortunately run-off typically coincides with this hatch. In years with late run-off, anglers can cast to healthy browns and cuttbows slashing for emerging caddisflies. Check my reports page and the NM Stream Flow page for conditions. |
