WEATHER AND CLOTHING
From mid May through September we typically have warm sunny days when quick-dry pants and long sleeve fishing shirts are ideal with waders. Mid-July through mid-August is when we can experience some light mountain rain showers in the afternoons, but be sure to always have a rain jacket any time of year. October through April can have cool to cold days with chances of snow, so incorporate a good layering system. A good layering system should include Under Armour or Ibex tops, long sleeve shirt, fleece vest, rain jacket, fishing gloves, and cap.
HIKE-IN WATERS
Hike-in trips to the Red River and Rio Grande require close attention to what you bring. I strongly recommend a hydration-type day pack with room for rain gear and plenty of water. On the Red River, we often hike and fish in waders. On the Rio Grande, there are some stretches we don't wade, which means you will want to hike and fish with quick-dry long pants and good hiking shoes. Bring waders: we can leave them in the vehicles if we won't be wading.
Thoughts to Ponder When Booking Your Trip
- When and where you want to fish
- Explain your expectations to help your guide determine the best plans for your fly fishing trip.
- Briefly explain your fly fishing skills, fly fishing background, your likes-dislikes and any skills you would like to work on.
- Reserve your fishing dates as soon as you know when you are coming to New Mexico with alternate dates if possible. During busy times, it may be hard to schedule short notice trips.
- Check to be sure your equipment and gear is in working order for your trip.
- There are a lot of outside factors a guide cannot control such as weather, changes in water condition, and your previous acquired or unacquired skills.
